Sandy's Burger Stand Interactive Kiosk

The goal of this project was to create a hypothetical touchscreen interface for the famous Sandy's burger stand on Barton Springs Rd. We were to make sure everything is as intuitive as possible and easy to use in order to maximize orders and make sure you don't get yelled at by any old Hispanic ladies at the window, and also very importantly give Sandy's an updated look. We were given an ordering sequence that goes as follows:

-order 1 hamburger with everything on it, no extras
-order 1 side of homemade fries
-order 1 large custard milkshake
-edit : take off onions & add mushrooms

Craigslist "redesign" prototype

We've all been to Craigslist.org and know how nice it is to sell or buy something. Its known for that but it's also notorious for being quite cluttered and quite basic. Our assignment was to hypothetically rebrand Craigslist and set up a new user friendly interface for its website. We had to keep all the features of it such as search and post to classifieds as well as an event calendar etc. The site is up and running but again its hypothetical so there is only one item up for sale and the search fields don't actually work. This is a book assignment for my graphic design 3 class. The assignment was to take pictures of a very specific area of the eastside of Austin, TX. We were then to create a concept based off of what we thought about it. From my concept of "Beauty in the Eye of the Beholder", I created this book. To portray the concept I physically applied it to the pages. The 1st half is black with a metallic paper. The black grainy images portray a person seeing the eastside for the first time. The metallic paper shows that it can still look appealing to someone who lives there because it is their home. The 2nd half is an interview that I conducted of a friend of mine and his mother who have lived on the eastside of Austin for over 60 years combined. The images get more and more colorful from beginning to end. I also used transparencies throughout the book to further prove my point.

I did a research paper on modern birds relationship to dinosaurs. Turns out dinosaurs never became fully extinct. You might have always thought this whenever you looked at crocodiles but dinosaurs closest relatives are not reptiles as once thought, its actually birds. Whenever a bird shits on your car, its actually an avian dinosaurs shit that you are smearing onto your windshield with your wipers.

This is the "interactive postcard" that we created. The purpose was to create an interactive postcards that still represent what the cards are about which is that someones house looks different to an outsider than it does to the person who lives there.

Eastside Story Postcards

We were given an area of East Austin in which we had to take pictures of different aspects of the culture of the people living there. On the first round of picture I focused on graffiti tags and stickers on various surfaces such as the backs of stop signs. On the second round of pictures I focused on lawn junk, basically crazy stuff you find in people's yards or on their porches. I literally creeped up on people lawns and took pictures of their lawn ornaments such as lawn gnomes, religious statues, and decaying and rusting debris.

The assignment for this project was finding a material that can be manipulated into letters. We had to exploit the materials qualities by designing with different aspects and qualities of the material. I chose paperclips because they are bendable and they hold their shape. As I describe in the poster itself, the paperclips are made of metal and hold there shape, same thing goes for girders. Since Bender from Futurama bends girders I linked the two together by representing bent letters supposedly bent by Bender. The final poster was 20in x 34in.

5 Minutes a Week Activity Booklet

This project took about a month and a half to complete. We got issued all the text need for the book and our job was to create a children's activity book out of it. We were given only a handful of images and we had to put in all the other graphics and maps and images. Designing a layout and a grid system which was enough for children to read was kind of tricky. Because we were only allowed to use 2 spot colors, which is just 2 colors with all tones of them, I decided to do the dotted bitmap effect to make things more original but still utilizing 1 color for the image. The actual book turned out to be around 47 pages long and was printed on charcoal drawing paper, which brought in the activity/ drawing aspect as well as the off-white natural looking aspect I was going for.

Kitchen of Meaning - Pastiche

This project was the first project assigned in my graphic design II class. The assignment was for everyone in the class to be assigned a word and from that we make a poster of the word representing itself, including all the names or our classmates. The word I was assigned was pastiche. Pastiche, in my words, means taking someone else's artwork and using the style or mixtures of others to influence your own artwork. Since art can be anything from street graffiti to film making I chose to mix the different faces of comic book art and the ever changing face of Superman throughout time. Superman has come a long way from the pages of a comic book in the 1930's to the present day remakes of old ideas. In a way, the movies that come out are pastiches of previous artists using using not only Superman but others. It now seems someone is going down a long list and is making live action movies of all kinds of superhero comic books since the beginning of comics. I did a little bit of research and found a certain style that comic books looked like in the 30's and went with it. The reason the superhero in question does not have a face or chest emblem is because the poster is not supposed to be about Superman but of comic book superheroes in general. I colored the character with an exaggeratedly large color halftone of the way comic books are colored in order to see how it works.

First Amendment

This assignment was called critical mass. The purpose of the assignment was to create four postcards representing one of the 10 amendments of the Bill of Rights. Sounds easy right? Wrong. We pooled together scans of tangible items with different patterns variations and textures. We also pooled together magazine clippings that we found interesting. These were the parameters and supplies necessary for the postcards. I chose the First Amendment of course because I think that that amendment is one of the most important rights that we have, and I'd say our founding fathers agreed, considering its numero uno. We created quite a few different cards and I picked the best four.

Documentation of the letter M

This assignment was to document a given letter of the alphabet either through photographs or compositions in various forms and environments found or created. Obviously I was assigned the letter M. I took quite a few pictures around campus but I didn't find very many obvious M's. I decided to broaden my horizons by heading downtown to see what I could find. I ended up documenting the letter M's use in neon signs outside of businesses trying to match, as closely as possible, with a found letter M on campus.

Scavenger Hunt

This was the first major project in my Image Methodology class. We were to take a series of 6 pictures of pretty much anything you could find which were related to each other. The first 2 images relate to each other by not only by composition but by pattern as well. The 2nd and 3rd images are related to each other by color the variations of grays on bottom and reds blending together on top. The 3rd and 4th images are related by texture as well as perspective. The 4th and 5th are related by color and perspective. Finally, the last 2 images are related obviously by shape.

Futura Type Specimen Book

This was the final project of the year for my first typography class. The assignment was to create a book showcasing a typeface (font) of your choice. The showcase was to show all or at least most of the variations of the typeface i.e. bold, italic, condensed, regular, etc. I have always like Futura not only because it is a san-serif typeface but I also like the geometry of the letters as well as a really sweet name. As expected I researched the creator of Futura and the ways it was used in that time. In the late 20's and early 30's Europe there was lots of reds and blacks on white paper. There was also lots of thick bars going from either top to bottom left to right or at 45 degree angles. I tried to encapsulate those styles as best I could while still sticking to the assignment. The cover's detail is pretty hard to see on the computer screen but if you check out the PDF version of it (linked below) you can we just exactly what is making up the image.

Design Culture Now

The assignment was to do a large contemporary poster exhibiting 4 graphic designers for the Design Culture Now show. The poster had to somehow incorporate the connection between the 4. The way I chose to link the 4 together was by physically linking the designers together with circles interlocking. The green circles in the background are there simply because I like green a whole lot.

I've been wanting to create a typeface for a long time. This started out as a school assignment where we had to create a pixel based typeface of these letters but I went back and finished it later and put it into a font making program and published it.

This was a very tedious project courtesy of one of my GDES professors, Tuan. We started out with concepts such as navigation, environmental, telecommunication, etc. I chose telecommunication and did an elaborate mind map of everything I could think of relating to it. I originally came up with a lot of branches coming out of connection aspect of telecom, the future of telecom, and how the government uses telecom. For connectability I had lots of ideas such as wi-fi. For future I had small microchip ideas. For big brother I had internet surveillance as well as camera surveillance. After creating 33 icons with various iterations between all the icons I chose these 3 images. The connectability icon consists of the antenna from a wireless router as well as the wi-fi signal being emitted. The future icon consists of the prongs from a microchip interconnected with an RFID implant chip. The big brother icon consists of the universal all seeing eye in a pyramid watching you through your computer.
